"You Are Not Alone"

Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce
By Tom Chillemi www.ssentinel.com After winning her battle with cancer Elizabeth Goins of Urbanna knows the power of her faith. Trusting a Higher Power helped Goins through the low points this year, including the loss of her mother. "When you've got a situation that you can't control, let God control it," she said last week. "There is nothing you can do but trust Him and believe that He's going to bring you out of it. "I thank God, he gave me faith and lifted me off my sick bed," said Goins, who is a licensed minister. It was Goins' energy the revived the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce in 2006 and helped it grow to 76 members before she got sick last winter. She is still president of the organization that will start its third year in January. Goins is a Water View native who pursued a career in Washington, D.C. before returning to Middlesex. This bout with breast cancer was not Goins' first. About 17 years ago, at the age of 38, she lost a breast to surgery. In February 2008 a routine mammogram revealed an abnormality. "I was in denial when they first told me," said Goins. Even after a specialist confirmed there were two spots of a very serious cancer, she refused the surgery and opted to have four chemotherapy treatments. "It was a nightmare. I had to take the stronger dose and it took all my hair out." During this time her mother Katherine Goins Green went to glory. "All this made me feel like I was in a never ending tornado," said Goins, adding the loss of her mother put Goins in another state of mind. Doctor's did not think the chemotherapy would work against this tough strain of cancer, she said, and surgery was the best option. Today, 8 months after surgery, she feels stronger than before. During the depression that cancer brings, Goins drew strength, not only from her faith, but family and friends, and others with the disease. She was self conscious when all her hair fell out and she didn't believe people who told her she looked good. "But they never knew how I felt on the inside," said Goins. "I felt like I was less of a woman. My breast was gone, my hair was gone, and I just had a hard time feeling like I was beautiful. "Well thanks be to God there were people around me that kept telling me that until I would eventually believe it myself." The power of faith It was at the cancer counseling center that Goins sorted things out in her mind. "Everybody there was the same as me . . . trying to get better." Some people didn't make it, their absence from the meeting put things in perspective, Goins said. "I'm just thankful I'm still alive. I tell my kids, 'I'm just going to enjoy my life and be happy with what I have.' " Much of the literature at the counseling center referred to faith and the power of positive thought. Goins plans to write about her experiences battling cancer. "I would tell others to, 'Stay positive and stay around positive people.' " During trying times, Goins got lots of encouragement. "People told me, 'Keep the faith. God told me you're going to live.' All kinds of people prayed for me and that was a blessing. "I really want people to know my story because if there is someone out there going through something similar I want them to know they are not alone and that they can fight it and make it through with God's help."

USDA RBEG Awards $100,000 to MPBDP

MPBDP
On August 5, the MPBDP was awarded a $100,000 Rural Business Enterprise Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture. Most of this funding will allow MPBDP to make low-interest loans to new or emerging entrepreneurs in the Middle Peninsula. Part of this funding will also allow the MPBDP to provide technical assistance to aspiring entrepreneurs in completing their loan applications. “The current credit crunch we are experiencing makes our loan program invaluable to small, start-ups”, said C. Newman, Program Director. “Having this funding also allows us to make lower-interest loans than we would otherwise be able to make.” The MPBDP is a mission-based 501(c)(3) organization whose goal is to promote compatible economic development in the Middle Peninsula by providing business support to potential and existing micro-entrepreneurs, businesses of 5 people or less. Since 2000, over 1200 entrepreneurs have received technical assistance and training through the MPBDP. A total of 24 businesses have received assistance with financing. Seventeen have received funding directly through the Program representing over $700,000 in loans. The Program itself consists of 3 phases of assistance: education, technical assistance and access to loan funds. Poised for Growth

A Special Occasion
Suély Maszack epitomizes what for many of us represents the American Dream. Suély immigrated to the United States in 1985 from Brazil. When she arrived with a B.A. in Education from the Universidade Federal De Minas Gerais, she spoke no English. Determined to support herself and her family, Suély learned the restaurant business from entry-level up, teaching herself Spanish in the process. In the ensuing 22 years Suély graduated from Banquet Manager to Garde-Manger Chef to Chef in New Jersey. In 2005 she relocated to Virginia, transferring through her employer, Sage Dining Services, to Christchurch School in Saluda while she began renovations to her new home in Mattaponi to add a certified commercial kitchen in her house. With the completion of her home-based kitchen was born “A Special Occasion” Catering in July 2005. In early 2006, Suély received an SBA Community Express loan with the help of the Middle Peninsula Business Development Partnership to install additional septic capacity for her commercial kitchen. Suély also registered for the MPBDP’s eight-week business training program, graduating in March 2007. Since that time, “A Special Occasion” Catering has continued strong and steady growth. In spring 2007, “A Special Occasion” purchased a delivery van to accommodate the regular weekly catering functions as well as the growing wedding and special events catering from Williamsburg to Washington, DC and points in between. “A Special Occasion” Catering provides quality food elegantly presented whether casual or fine dining for two or 2,000. Suély will provide breakfast, lunch or dinner for any function from small, personal meals or dinner parties to large wedding receptions and holiday galas. Lunches may be ordered and delivered the same day. To provide better service, orders must be called in or faxed by 10:30 a.m. Weekly and seasonal dinner menus are available. Weekly dinners may be ordered and will be delivered on Monday for the week. This option is great for seniors who find it difficult to prepare meals, or for busy families who don’t have time. If set-up and/or clean up is required, a charge of 12% is added as well as Virginia sales tax. “A Special Occasion” takes pride in personalized wedding reception planning tastings. Appointments are made with the family to come, sit and enjoy tastings of the different menu options before deciding on the event menu. Along with more traditional menu offerings, Suély is happy to share the culture of Brazil through some signature dishes prepared upon request. The Middle Peninsula Business Development Partnership has been honored to work with Suély and to watch the growth of this entrepreneur. In Suély’s own words: “Who would’ve guessed that 25 years ago when I arrived in the U.S. not speaking one word of English that today I would own my own home and my own business.” Congratulations and much continued success! For Catering Services, call 804-785-1008.

LOCAL ARTIST CHOSEN FOR PHILADELPHIA EXHIBIT

Mary Ellen Lee
As reported by the Southside Sentinel July 26, 2007: A work of art by Mary Ellen Lee of Urbanna has been selected to be shown at the Red Bull Art of Can Exhibition at The F.U.E.L. Collection from October 18 to November 2 in Philadelphia. Lee's "Bullheaded Redneck Girl" was chosen in a national contest. It was the first time Lee has worked with metal. She regularly paints in watercolors. The inspiration for Lee's work came when she went to her first NASCAR race with "a bunch of redneck girls," she said. She described her creation as "Terminator Girl meets Red Bull." Lee used 130 Red Bull cans and her friends helped by drinking and collecting the cans. She set them using a hair-styling mannequin as a base. Lee's "Bullheaded Redneck Girl" will be on the exhibit's website at www.redbullartofthecan.com by the end of July. Lee is invited to attend the kick-off private gala reception on October 18 where her work will be viewed by a panel of judges, members of the media, and fellow peers in the art community. A watercolor painting by Lee, who is a professional hair stylist, was chosen for the 2002 Urbanna Oyster Festival poster.
