| Dorothy Fagan 04/10/2009 - An Introductory Program for artists wishing to participate in Dinner with the Muse First Weekend will be held May 5, 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Middle Peninsula Business Development Partnership Board Room in Saluda.
Artist Dorothy Fagan will give an overview of her program to help artists market themselves beyond the region through a network of virtual studios on her Dinner with the Muse Interactive Visual Arts E-Magazine and First Weekend events. Fagan will provide information on how to participate and marketing tools to help artists reach their own niche markets with their work.
To help artists reach beyond the region, she will demonstrate Website Savvy for Artists, her innovative website package which artists can use to do their own websites themselves while learning how. She likens it to on-the-job training for artists. She shows artists how they can expand the market for their art by listening carefully to their clients and using the web to find opportunities to reach niche audiences who are looking for exactly what they have to offer.
Fagan got her ideas for marketing art by listening to people from all over the country while she and her husband, Jim Waggener who is also an artist, traveled to art fairs from Michigan and New England to Florida for five years. The common idea she heard expressed throughout the country is people looking for that special connection with heart and soul.
“Artists have this gift,” says Fagan. “Artists have the ability to inspire that connection for others through their art. As artists, it is our job to get over whatever fears or ignorance we might have about computers. Our country needs creativity ~ now more than ever. People are paring down to just the things which are most important to them ~ artists can help people get in touch with what these heart and soul things are.”
While artists are helping others by making their art more available, Fagan has designed Website Savvy to enable artists to get their own website started quickly and easily with step by step instructions. As they see results, they can upgrade and learn as they go.
Fagan used this learn-as-you-go method to train herself to use the computer before moving to Mathews County nine years ago. When she started her marketing company in 1986, she did layouts in pencil. Then she helped clients including Union Camp, Virginia Natural Gas, Old Dominion University and many small businesses through the transition to computer driven graphics. By promising projects by Tuesday, then taking the software manual with her to the beach with her three boys over the weekend ~ by Monday she was back in the office getting it done. Her clients taught her to never let ‘not knowing how’ get in the way of doing her job.
“The most difficult issue for any of my clients, large or small, is always the problem of seeing from their own clients’ point of view.” Dorothy, a Gemini, notes, “providing this double point of view has always been one of my gifts!
