VALUE-ADDED AGRICULTURE

MPBDP and Rona Sullivan 01/26/2009 - On Saturday, February 21, the Middle Peninsula Business Development Partnership and Rona Sullivan will present a Value-Added Products Workshop. This day-long workshop (9 a.m.-2 p.m.) will explore things to think about to turn your family farm into a niche commodity producer. Classroom training will look at the finances behind the decision as well as a review of recommended procedures to insure success. Creating a niche market requires some careful, thoughtful research and imagination. The influx of people to this region affords a number of opportunities for local producers and growers. The Sullivan’s are all Virginia natives. Renaissance people: marrying primitive and modern technologies. Their priorities are in learning to be healthy, raising and eating real food, researching renewable resources, and developing a balanced eco-system and symbiotic relationship with their animals. There are no pesticides, poisons, or herbicides, or purchased fertilizers on the farm. They don't add ANY organic material to landfills, as their chickens, goats, ducks, and plants can make use of it. According to Rona “our desire was to honor and understand the cultural heritage of our ancestors who were highly skilled agricultural people. History has come alive for us by genealogical research into their emigration and acclimation to America. Farm life is full of challenge, risks, adventure, and perpetual opportunities for learning and teaching.” The cost to register for this comprehensive workshop is $60 and includes all materials. Space is limited. Contact the MPBDP at 804-758-4917 or register on-line at www.mpbdp.org.
