| |
| Belle Mont Vineyards and MPBDP 10/17/2008 - The Middle Peninsula Business Development Partnership and Ray Petrie of Belle Mount Vineyards are partnering to present an evening seminar on grape growing and winemaking. This workshop will be presented at the Saluda Professional Center on Monday, November 10, from 6 until 8 p.m. Key topics to be covered in the workshop will include Vineyard Site Selection, Soil and Nutrients, Grape Varieties, Trellis Designs, Pruning, Pest Control, Economics, and Resources. Winemaking Principles will include Fruit Sources, Equipment, and Legal Considerations.
Belle Mount Vineyards grows many European grape varieties, a few hybrids and of course the historic American grape, Norton, originally discovered in Richmond. As a Virginia Farm Winery, Belle Mount is permitted to sell directly to customers - a little like buying from the farmer's market. The Winery is located near Warsaw in Richmond County on Virginia's Northern Neck.
Ray Petrie is a Virginia Tech graduate with a background in chemistry and horticulture. Since 2002, with the cultivation of eight acres of vineyards for the winery, Ray has helped to promote the growth of the Northern Neck Wine Trail. He and his wife Catherine opened Belle Mount Vineyards in 2004 and currently produce 1200 cases per year. From planting the vines to serving the final product, Ray has shaped the handcrafted nature of his products. Ray provides technical support for novice and professional growers in Virginia and is a member of the Virginia Vineyards Association and the Virginia Wineries Association.
The Middle Peninsula Business Development Partnership (MPBDP) is a mission-based, non-profit organization whose goal is to help foster economic growth in the Middle Peninsula by providing business support to potential and existing micro-entrepreneurs. Currently the Partnership operates under the direction of the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission with funding provided in part by the Virginia Enterprise Initiative and USDA Rural Business Enterprise Program.
The cost to register for this seminar is $45 and includes all materials. Space is limited. Contact the MPBDP at 804-758-4917 or register on-line at www.mpbdp.org.
