Color & Creativity Demonstrations September 5 & 6

Dorothy Fagan 08/28/2008 - Two Color & Creativity Painting Demonstrations by artist Dorothy Fagan will be held on Friday at 11:00 am and on Saturday at 11:00 am during the Market Days Festival on Main Street in Mathews. In her demonstration, Fagan will show how creativity is a teachable, learnable skill which all people have ~ a ground-breaking topic which Fagan writes about in her new book, The Suncatcher. In her plein air painting demonstration, Fagan will show how the earth and gratitude provide essential elements of the creative process. In her book Fagan explains, "The temporal qualities of the landscape provide any artist, novice or master, a very special connection to the earth and Creative Spirit. Much like prayer, plein air painting is an opportunity to practice faith. To accept the brush strokes one makes, exactly as they are in the moment, is truly a lesson in humility and gratitude in it's simplest form." In her book, The Suncatcher, written for a graduate program in creativity at Baker University which Fagan taught this summer; she likens learning creativity to riding a bicycle. "It's all about balance. Once you realize where the controls are, exactly when to pedal, how to shift gears and when to coast; you will quickly convert blocked energy into fuel for your passion." Many of the students in Fagan's graduate course this summer were teachers themselves. Pam Baker, a fifth grade teacher from Kansas shared her surprise, "To be honest, I was a nay-sayer when I started. How was this mathematical, logical, sequential, black and white thinker going to do this? Then I began to understand the concepts that were being taught. I saw value in the lessons learned and how they could change my life. I have gained life skills that will stay with me for all the years I have yet to live!" Fagan's success with the graduate students at Baker this summer is being translated into a pilot program for eleven Mathews middle school students this fall. Through the Bay School's after-school fine art grant, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students will test out Fagan's Ping Journal for themselves starting in September. Also featured at the demonstration are the original paintings, painted by Fagan at locations around Mathews this summer, including many views of Bethel Beach, the Piankatank River, Hallieford, New Point and Gwynn's Island which are featured in her book. Both demonstrations and the exhibit are free and open to the public during festival hours, 10 am - 5 pm Sept. 5 and 6.
